After receiving his degree, he started as a professor of philosophy at Madras Presidency College before moving on to the University of Mysore.
First Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962 and second President of India from 1962 to 1967 was the Indian philosopher and politician Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In addition, he served as the 4th Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948 and the 2nd Indian Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1952.

Why Do We Celebrate Teachers Day On 5th September?

In India, September 5th is celebrated as Teachers’ Day every year since 1967 in honour of the contribution(s) of Teachers have given to society.
The famous educator Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a strong supporter of education and was also a well-known diplomat, scholar, the President of India, and above all, a teacher, celebrates his birth day on September 5th.
When some of his friends and pupils asked him if they may celebrate his birthday with him, he responded, “Instead of celebrating my birthday individually, it would be my happy privilege, if 5th September is marked as Teachers’ day.” The fifth of September has since been celebrated throughout India as Teachers Day.
Some of the late Dr. S. Radhakrishnan’s well-known students organised a gathering in 1965 to honour that illustrious Great Teacher. In his remarks to the audience, Dr. Radhakrishnan stated his strong opposition to the celebration of his birthday and emphasised that instead, his birthday should be observed as “Teachers’ Day,” honouring other Great Teachers of Bangladesh and India.
One of his closest friends throughout, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, had a lot of positive things to say about Dr. Radhakrishnan: “He has served his country in many capacities. But above all, he is a great teacher from whom all of us have learnt much and will continue to learn. It is India’s peculiar privilege to have a great philosopher, a great educationist and a great humanist as her President. That in itself shows the kind of men we honour and respect.”
