About Ganesh Chaturthi (Ganesh Utsav):
Lord Ganesh is the child of Lord Shiva and the Goddess Parvati and is portrayed as having an elephant’s head on a human body. Additionally, Ganesh is also the patron god of travelling.
According to Hinduism lord, Ganesh is also considered the god of wealth, sciences, knowledge, wisdom, and prosperity and it is believed that he has a capacity to remove barriers. Other names for Ganesh include Ganapati, Heramba, Ekadanta, Vinayaka, and Pillaiyar.
The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi (Ganesh Utsav) honours Lord Ganesh’s birth. Ganesh Chaturthi is regarded by Hindus as the most auspicious day to worship the adored elephant-headed god, Ganesha is revered for bestowing good fortune and is renowned for his ability to vanquish obstacles.
According to Hindu belief, Ganesh is the one who can eliminate all barriers to achievement, particularly when individuals are starting a new business or industry, hence his blessings are frequently requested during religious events.
Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi (vinayagar chaturthi, vinayaka chavithi), is a festival of 10-day celebration, which commemorates the birth of the elephant-headed deity lord ganesh, the god of wisdom and prosperity. Ganesh Chaturthi starts on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar.

On Happy Vinayaka Chaturthi (Ganesh Utsav), Ganesh’s statues are erected on elevated platforms in homes or in ornately decorated outside tents at the beginning of the festival. Pranapratishtha, a rite to bring life to the idols, is the first step in worship. This is followed by shhodashopachara, or the 16 ways of expressing adoration. Chanting of the Ganesh Upanishad and other Vedic hymns is done while red sandalwood paste and yellow and red flowers are used to anoint the statues during Ganapati pooja. Additionally, coconut, jaggery, and 21 modaks (sweet dumplings) thought to be Ganesha’s favourite food are served to him.
At the end of the festival Ganesh Chaturthi, the idols of lord ganesh are carried to nearby waterways, rivers in Large processions with drumbeats, devotional singing, and dancing. Then idols are submerged in those rivers, there as part of a ritual (called ganesh visarjan, ganpati visarjan) that represents lord Ganesh’s return to Mount Kailas, the home of his parents Shiva and Parvati (Ganesh Family).
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in which state ?
Due in part to Ganesh’s popularity as a deity to worship, this event- Ganesh Chaturthi (Ganesh Utsav) is still one of the most extensively observed in India. Even though this festival is observed all around the world, it is particularly popular in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Why is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated? – Ganesh Chaturthi History:
There are two origin tales about the creation of Lord Ganesha:
- The first one is that, one day Parvati (the goddess, and mother of ganesha) was bathing, Ganesha was just a toddler at that time. Shiva requested Ganesha to watch the door while his wife Parvati finished her bath. Later, when Shiva returned, Ganesh had refused to let him into his house, which infuriated Shiva and led to his chopping off Ganesha’s head. Parvati got Distressed and heartbroken by this incident. Parvati asked Shiva to found a replacement head for Ganesha. The only thing that could be recovered was an elephant head, which was then positioned on Ganesha’s body.
- The second one, less widely accepted version claims that Ganesha was created consciously by Shiva and Parvati at the direction of more powerful heavenly beings. The goal of Ganesha was to obstruct the way of evil spirits.
Ganesh Chaturthi is generally accepted to have been observed for the first time between 271 B.C. and 1190 A.D. under the authority of the Satavahana, Rashtrakuta, and Chalukya regimes.
When Maratha ruler Shivaji (c. 1630–80) utilised Ganesh Chaturthi to incite nationalist enthusiasm among his subjects, who were fighting the Mughals, gradually ganesh chaturthi became a grand public celebration. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, an Indian patriot, reintroduced the event in 1893 after the British outlawed political gatherings. The event is now observed by Hindu communities all over the world, although it is especially well-liked in Maharashtra and south-western regions in India.
