M. S. Swaminathan is an agricultural scientist, plant geneticist, administrator and Indian agronomist, recommended far-reaching ways to improve India’s farming system when he chaired the NCF in 2004 (National Commission on Farmers) and contributed basic research related to potato, wheat and rice, in areas such as cytogenetics (the branch of genetics that studies the structure of DNA within the cell nucleus), ionizing radiation [atom’s energy in form of electromagnetic waves (gamma or X-rays) or particles (neutrons, beta or alpha)] and radiosensitivity (the relative susceptibility of cells, tissues, organs or organisms to the harmful effect of ionizing radiation).
