PMFBY is currently in use in 27 states and union territories. By providing comprehensive risk coverage from pre-sowing to post-harvest losses, the scheme aims to reach the largest number of farmers possible.

This PMFBY scheme formulated in one line theme i.e., One Nation–One Scheme by replacing earlier two schemes National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) and Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (MNAIS).

Crops notified by the State Government(s) in its notification are covered under the crop insurance scheme. Farmers who have lost their harvests are compensated by the central government and state government(s) i.e., working together.
