The day commemorates the birth of Lord Buddha, one of the greatest spiritual leaders of all time. According to UNESCO, the Lord, who is also known as Gautam Buddha, was born Prince Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, Nepal, in 623 B.C. Gautam Buddha is the founder of Buddhism, and he taught the world about dharma, nonviolence, harmony, kindness, and the way to Nirvana (निर्वाण: Nirvana (nibbana) literally means “blowing out” or “quenching”).

Gautam Buddha was a Buddhist philosopher, spiritual leader, and meditator. He is said to have meditated constantly for 49 days under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, before attaining enlightenment. He chose the spiritual path and travelled to various locations throughout the world to promote the message of knowledge and peace.

He spent his long meditation trying to figure out how to stop the ‘suffering’. Later, he taught that The Four Noble Truths, the core of his teachings, are the key to ending suffering and sins. Every year on Vaishaka Purnima, Lord Buddha’s devotees celebrate his birthday with great zeal.
