World Food Safety Day (WFSD)

As we all know about human’s need is – Food including water, and other basic necessities are- cloth and shelter for living.

Indian action-drama film, title- (रोटी कपड़ा और मकान) Roti Kapda Aur Makaan which was written, directed, and produced by Manoj Kumar, was based on these basic needs ( i.e., Food including freshwater, cloth, and shelter ), in this film – the characters struggle to get these basic needs for life, the actor(s) played their characters and almost lost everything like Family members, friends, and his character too.

Well, the end of that film learns so many things like- Food is a necessity and food has acted as a catalyst for societal transformation, development, and expansion.

But nowadays, food safety is becoming an important issue because of:

• By the way- food is produced
• Storage of food
• Handling and caring of food
• Consumption and health issue

The World Food Safety Day:

This is to draw global attention to the health consequences of contaminated food and water.

The principles of food safety aim to prevent food from becoming contaminated and causing food poisoning.

Every year on 7th of June celebrated as World Food Safety Day (WFSD). World Food Safety Day 2019 Theme was ‘Food Safety, everyone’s business’.

For human’s growth and development, food acted as the energy source to do work for the minimum requirements of a person’s life for a decent standard and it gives societal transformation and expansion of human race that’s why food safety is must draw global attention to the health consequences of contaminated food and water.

So the health of consumer should be the first priority in the absence of food safety may harm the societal health balance. Hence, to mark the importance of food safety the World Food Safety Day(WFSD) is celebrated every year.

The United Nations (UN) has assigned two of its agencies:

• Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and
• World Health Organisation (WHO) to lead efforts in promoting food safety around the world.

When was the first World Food Safety Day celebrated?

The first anniversary of World Food Safety Day: In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 7 as the World Food Safety Day (WFSD). June 7, 2019, marks the first anniversary of World Food Safety Day

The theme for World Food Safety Day 2019 Theme was ‘Food Safety, everyone’s business’.

Through this day, WHO pursues its efforts to draw attention and inspire action to reduce the burden of food-borne diseases globally through the public agenda and to help:

• prevent,
• detect and manage foodborne risks,
• contributing to food security,
• human health,
• economic prosperity,
• agriculture,
• market access,
• tourism and sustainable development in the public agenda and reduce the burden of food-borne diseases globally.

World Food Safety Day 2020 Theme

The second anniversary of World Food Safety Day (WFSD): i.e., 7th of June 2020 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), under the theme ‘Food safety, everyone’s business’, the action-oriented campaign will promote global food safety awareness and call upon countries and decision-makers, the private sector, civil society, UN organizations and the general public to take action.

Food safety is a shared responsibility in which everybody has a role to play. It is our duty to ensure that the food we consume is safe and will not cause damages to our health.

1 – Ensure it’s safe – Government must ensure safe and nutritious food for all

2 – Grow it safe – Agriculture and food producers need to adopt good practices

3 – Keep it safe – Business operators must make sure food is safe

4 – Eat it safe: All consumers have a right to safe, healthy and nutritious food

5 – Team up for safety – Food Safety is a shared responsibility

This year’s theme, ‘Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow’, stresses that production and consumption of safe food has immediate and long-term benefits for people, the planet and the economy.
